A Brief History of eBay

The first item that was sold on eBay was a broken laser point, which was sold for $14.83. Within a year of its inception, in November 1996, eBay struck its first third-party licensing deal with a company called Electronic Travel Auction. By the virtue of this deal, eBay came to get the right to sell plane tickets and other travel products by using SmartMarket Technology. In 1997, the company changed its name ActionWeb to eBay in the month of September.

The name of the company was supposed to be echobay.com, but the name had already been taken by a gold mining company called Echo Bay Mines. Thus the second choice of the name, eBay comes in. In 1998, eBay went public. The company also purchased PayPal on October 14, 2002.
